2018 National Week of Action

A week of action to reimagine safety and justice for our communities

Since Trump's election, we have witnessed ongoing attacks on our humanity, targeting the country's most vulnerable communities--immigrants, women, the poor, queer and trans people, Muslims, and Black people. Around the country, states are consolidating power by attacking public education, increasing police budgets and ICE enforcement, while the federal government repeals policies that have historically provided mobility and protection for communities of color.

From November 11 to November 17, Million Hoodies Movement for Justice and the Marsha P. Johnson Institute will kick off our annual week-long national conversation to reimagine community safety with the #WeKeepUsSafe National Week of Action. The We Keep Us Safe Week of Action is a political intervention that encourages grassroots innovation to demand investments in humanity and our planet, safety beyond policing, real community control, worker rights, community defense, and divestment from militarization and other programs that oppress our people.

#WeKeepUsSafe Organizing Principles

  • Led by directly impacted communities

  • Pro Black

  • Shift control of resources and political power to impacted communities

  • Use narratives and organizing practices that leave no marginalized community behind

  • Deepen relationships across oppressed communities

Following the 2018 midterm elections, we are coming together at this critical moment to ensure that our stories are integrated into a governing agenda and that the representation of communities impacted by criminalization and systemic violence are included in policy responses for safety and justice. During the week, Million Hoodies chapters, the Marsha P. Johnson Institute and our partners, will host local events, community forums, and direct actions to make entire campuses, cities, towns, and communities safe by building Freedom Cities.

On Monday, November 5, please join us for the We Keep Us Safe week of action national call to find out how you can show up and show out for an entire week of actions building real solutions to keep us safe.
